PhD Thesis Submission, Obtaining the PhD Title
PhD students have 3 academic years following the successful completion of their complex exam to submit the PhD thesis.
Prior to submission, the student is required to present their PhD thesis at an internal (workplace) defence. Before this defense, the dissertation and the theses are reviewed by two opponents appointed by the supervisor. During the internal defense, the student is obliged to respond to the reviewers’ reports. The internal defense is held at the department of BME VBK where the Candidate conducted their PhD research. This requirement also applies to Candidates who carried out their PhD research at an external workplace. In such cases, the defense must be held at the department of the internal consultant; however, this may be deviated from at the supervisor’s request, provided there are appropriate professional reasons and the agreement of all departments concerned. If an internal defense is also required at the partner institution, the Department will do its best to coordinate the two procedures in accordance with the regulations. It is recommended that the internal defense also be announced within an academic working committee. By the time of the internal defense, the thesis booklet must also be prepared in accordance with the guidelines.
The PhD thesis may only be submitted if, at the internal defense, the majority of the attending participants holding a scientific degree agree that the dissertation is suitable for submission once the suggested modifications are incorporated.
At the Faculty, the Habilitation Committee and Doctoral Council (HBDT) is authorised to award the PhD degree in the field of Natural Sciences within the discipline of Chemical Sciences, and in the field of Engineering and Technology within the discipline of Bio-, Environmental and Chemical Engineering.
The PhD thesis submission pack must be handed in at the Dean's Office (BME, Building K, Floor I, Room 22) following the internal defense. Please see the checklist at the end of the PhD thesis submission process description for the full list of documents the submission pack must contain. The PhD thesis submission is evaluated at the next session of the HBDT (click here to view the dates of the HBDT's upcoming sessions). At this meeting, the Evaluation Committee is appointed, which includes the two official reviewers. The conditions for obtaining the PhD title are set out in BME's Doctoral and Habilitation Regulations.
On behalf of the Chair of the HBDT, the members of the Evaluation Committee are officially invited to accept their role by the administrator of the Doctoral School. Upon acceptance of their role, the administrator forwards the dissertation to the two reviewers, who have two months (counting term-time only) to prepare their written report. Upon receipt of the second report, the administrator sends the make-up of the Evaluation Committee with the Candidate. The Candidate may then begin organising the public defense. The public defense must be held within two months of the receipt of the second supporting report (counting term-time only). The date of the defense must be arranged so that the defense can be announced on the 'doktori.hu' website at least three weeks in advance.
If the dissertation is to be classified as confidential, please contact the administrator or secretary of the Doctoral School one HBDT cycle prior to submission in order to arrange approval of the confidentiality request.
