Department of Inorganic and Analytical Chemistry

The Department of Inorganic and Analytical Chemistry, BME (http://iaachem.bme.hu/en) has a long tradition, being the first chemistry department of the university. The department has 25 full time employees (5 full and 7 associate professors), and the total number of co-workers is 80, including the researchers of two research groups of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and the retired but still active colleagues. Four co-workers are full members of the Academy, and the number of young employees (under 35) is more than 30.

Analytical chemistry:
  • Environmental analysis (field and laboratory methods)
  • Chemical and biosensors, nanosensors
  • Chromatography (GC, HPLC, MS and MS-MS detection, new adsorbents)
  • Applied electrochemical research
  • Pharmacokinetic analysis
  • Pharmaceutical analysis
  • NMR spectroscopy
  • Elemental analysis
  • Scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, molecular spectroscopy
  
Materials science and inorganic chemistry:
  • Synthesis of organometallic compounds
  • Quantum chemical investigation of the structure and reactions of inorganic and metal-organic molecules
  • Study of carbenes and ionic liquids
  • Preparation and application of nanostructures, gas sensing, photocatalysis, atomic layer deposition (ALD)
  • Analysis of the structure and thermal behavior of solid materials
  • Preparation of silicones, studying their structure and technological (industrial and medical) application

 
There is a rich research infrastructure at the department: XRD, SEM-EDX, UV-VIS, PL, FTIR, NMR, AAS, ICP-OES, SPR imaging, TG/DTA-MS, TG-FTIR, DSC, GC-MS, HPLC-MS-MS, QCM, AFM, Zeta potential tester, particle size analysis, potentiostat/galvanostat, scanning electrochemical microscopy, pH-tester, conductometer, coulumbmetric and potentiometric Karl Fisher titrator, high input resistance voltage meters.

The research at the department is funded by Hungarian and international grants: OTKA, MTA, FP7, Marie Curie Network, etc.

In addition, the department is in contact with several multinational companies and SMEs. The industrial projects range from chemical failure analysis, through analysis of industrial samples to joint technology developments. Some of our larger industrial partners: Volkswagen, General Electric, Samsung, Sanofi-Chinoin, Richter, Egis, BASF.
