All the members of the exam board are required to have an academic degree. The candidate’s supervisor may not be a member of the board.
Details of the academic training and requirements are contained in the Doctoral School's Training Plan. The list of main and side subjects can be found on the following Faculty page: Rules and regulations - BME Vegyészmérnöki és Biomérnöki Kar. One main and one side subject must be chosen for the complex examination.
2. HBDT Decision
The HBDT appoints the final complex examination subjects and committee members (including its chairman). The HBDT also appoints the applicant's consultant.
3. Organising the Complex Examination
The applicant organises the complex examination with the help of the consultant.
4. Entering the Doctoral School
Following a successful complex examination, the applicant is officially enrolled onto the PhD course at the start of the following semester as a fee-paying student. The student has to pay tuition fee for every semester of their active student status. The current tuition fee for international students can be found on the following University page:Tuition fees - BME Xplore
Tuition fee for the 2025/26 academic year: 4500EUR/semester. (Fee-paying students may submit a tuition fee reduction request at the start of the academic term.)
Though the student is not required to register for or complete any further subjects, they are officially an active student throughout this semester. Once the 240 credit points are added to the student's Neptun account (as all academic requirements have by this point been met), the student is awarded absolutorium.
The student may begin the process of preparing and submitting their PhD thesis before the end of this semester. An internal defense must be held and absolutorium must be achieved before the student may submit their PhD thesis. (Please see the following page for more information about PhD thesis submission: PhD thesis submission - BME Vegyészmérnöki és Biomérnöki Kar)
The PhD thesis (and its attachments) must be submitted at least two weeks before any HBDT session. The HBDT appoints the public defense's evaluation committee (including the two official reviewers). The reviewers complete their review within two months (counting term-time only). If both reviews are positive and supportive of the PhD thesis' public defense, the public defense may be held by the PhD candidate.
