Elements of the PhD Programme
Research activity carried out within the topics announced by the Doctoral School constitutes the most important part of the PhD programme. Each doctoral student has one and only one supervisor, who bears full responsibility for directing and supporting the doctoral student’s studies, research work, publication of results, and the preparation of the dissertation. In the case of an external supervisor, the Council of the Doctoral School (DIT) appoints a consultant who assists the supervisor’s work and monitors the student’s professional progress.
The tutorial nature of the programme is emphasised by regular consultations recognised with credit points (Consultation 1–8 subjects). The student’s level of preparedness and activity shown during consultations are evaluated by the supervisor with a grade each semester. Similarly, the supervisor evaluates and certifies the student’s research activities (Research Work 1–17 subjects) and publication activities (Publication 1–3 and Presentation 1–3 subjects).
In the first stage of the programme, in addition to research work and the publication of research results, the majority of the educational components of the PhD programme must be completed, including Main Subject 1-2 and Side Subject 1–2, attendance of seminars (Seminar 1–2), guided teaching activities (Teaching Activity 1–6), and participation in professional forums (Professional Forum 1–4). These activities account for 48 credits out of the 120 credits of the first stage of the programme. In the second stage of the programme, the emphasis is on research, the publication of results, and the preparation of the dissertation. In this stage, these activities account for 102 credits out of the 120 credits. Of the total 240 credits of the four-year programme, a total of 174 credits are awarded for research and publication activities.
At the beginning of each semester, the student is required to submit a Work Plan approved by the supervisor for the given semester, and from the second semester onwards, a supervisor-certified Research Report (1 page) on the previous semester. The Work Plan must include the courses taken, the planned teaching activities, and an outline of the research work planned for the semester. The report must include the courses completed in the previous semester, the teaching activities carried out, a brief outline of the results achieved in the research work, and finally a consolidated list of publications published to date. In the first active semester, the work plan must be submitted by the end of the 3rd week; in subsequent semesters, both the Work Plan and the Research Report must be submitted by the end of the registration week, in accordance with the information provided by the Secretary of the Doctoral School.
