Aim of the subject:

This subject deals with the preparation, behaviour and synthetic application of polar organometallic compounds containing alkali- and alkaliearth metal atoms. The lectures assume that the students have a knowledge of organic chemistry at advanced level of a university natural sciences degree. First, application of elemental metals as well as organometallic reagents like activated alkyllithiums and superbases for synthesis of high activity organometallic componds are discussed (synthesis of alkyllithiums, Grignard reagents, metalation, etc.). In a second part of the lectures applications of the organometallic species in reactions with different electrophilic reagents are demonstrated with numerous practical examples. Application of inert atmosphere in laboratory and industrial scales as well as the special treatment and safety problems of alkalialkyl reagents are discussed. Several industrial applications of these reactions are also presented.
